Hello and welcome to the site! Below is a little about me.
My teaching background
I started teaching high school right after graduating from college. My first year, all I had were the standards and a textbook. The textbook did not cover more than half of the standards, so I basically built my entire curriculum. Through this process, I discovered that I really enjoyed making curriculum and as the years progressed, was always making tweaks and refining my lessons to make them better. I won teacher of the year, from submissions across the state, my fifth year of teaching.
My focus on Place Based Education
After my children were born, I left the classroom. However, I continued in my education. In one of my research classes, each person had to pick a research problem and over time, write a dissertation proposal. My research question centered around finding an educational approach that would help the rural Appalachian students academically because they are basically forgotten when it comes to educational research and the national conversation about “underserved” educational communities.
While researching, I discovered Place Based Education. Honestly, it is not a “new” approach, but when you are used to the current education system in the United States, it definitely seems new. To learn more about Place Based Education, read this blog post.
What I want this site to accomplish
- To be a place for educators to find Place Based lessons that they can implement.
- To share recommendations (especially books) and lessons I think are beneficial.
- To cheer you on as you educate the next generation of learners!
